HILO, Hawaii - Bob Runyon pitched a complete game three-hitter to lead the Bulldogs to an 11-1 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium. The victory, Fresno State's fourth in its last five games, improves the team's record to 26-16 (10-9 WAC) while the Vulcans drop to 5-27 (3-17 WAC).
Fresno State jumped out to an early lead over Hawai'i-Hilo when they scored three runs in the top of the first. Dan Young led off with a single and the following two batters advanced Young on their outs. The clean-up batter, Brandon Gemoll, walked and then stole his second base of the season.
Casey McGehee stepped to the plate and knocked his third triple of the season to score Young and Gemoll. Two pitches later, McGehee scored on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth, Brad Harper hit his seventh home run of the season over the left field fence to increase the Bulldog lead to 4-0.
Josh Labandeira scored in the fifth when the Hilo pitcher threw his second wild pitch of the night to give the Bulldogs a 5-0 lead.
Fresno State added three more runs in the top of the seventh to put the game well in hand. Casey McGehee hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Oscar Lopez. Two batters later Ben Fritz singled to score Labandeira and Gemoll to give the Bulldogs an 8-0 lead.
In the top of the eighth, the Bulldogs added two more runs. The Vulcan pitcher walked in Joey Myers. Later in the inning McGehee hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Young giving the Bulldogs a 10-0 lead.
The Vulcans scored their lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Fresno State lead to 10-1. The Bulldogs responded in the ninth with a run of their own to make the final 11-1.
