HILO, Hawaii - Fresno State pounded out 20 hits and got another outstanding pitching performance en route to a 15-2 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo at Wong Stadium. The win, the Bulldogs' fifth in their last six games, runs their record to 27-16 (11-9 WAC) while the Vulcans drop to 5-28 (3-18 WAC).
Heroes abounded for Fresno State in the win. Oscar Lopez led the Bulldogs with a 5-for-5, two RBI game. Josh Labandeira and Brandon Gemoll added three hits apiece, while Casey McGehee added a pair of hits and three BRIs. Gemoll also had four RBIs. In addition, Dan Young scored three runs from the leadoff spot.
Francisco Nieves (5-1) was strong on the mound, piching up a complete-game victory with a five hitter. He gave up one earned run and a walk while striking out six.
The Bulldogs jumped all over Hawai'i-Hilo early, scoring seven runs on six hits in the second inning. They added a run in the fourth, three in the sixth and two in the seventh and eighth innings.
The Vulcans scored runs in the second. Billy Rayl doubled and moved to second on a throwing error. He then stole home. In the third, Brian Rooke hit a routine fly to center that was lost in the lights. As the ball landed behind the oncoming Bulldog centerfielder, Rooke rounded second base and slid into third. He scored on Kaliko Oligo's grounder.
The teams play a noon game on Saturday to end the three-game series. The game will take place at Wong Stadium.
