FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State holds the 11th place spot in the 55th annual Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at the Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz, Calif. The 18-team tournament field consists of eight of the national top-50 teams as well as three District 7 teams besides Fresno State.
Oregon holds first place of the first two rounds with its score of 571. The 'Dogs scored 592 putting them over one District 7 team, Nevada at 601. San Jose State scored 585 and Hawai'i shot 589. The four District 7 teams are battling for two NCAA tournament spots.
Lars Johansson from San Diego State is in first individually, after shooting 65-67-132. Bullard High School graduate Jason Higton from Pacific is just four strokes behind Johansson shooting 71-65-136. The Bulldogs are lead by sophomore Daniel Timmons who is performing in only his fourth tournament for the 'Dogs. Timmons shot 69-70-139.
No. 5 Nick Watney is the closest Bulldog after Timmons, shooting 71-79-150. Junior Dustin Smith shot 78-74-152 with fellow junior Jonathon Echols shooting 85-74-159. Finishing up the Bulldogs' lineup was Freshman Brandon Coats who shot 77-80-157.
"With the slick and sloping greens, this is a tough course," head coach Mike Watney said. "Pasatiempo demands precision shooting. I watched at least four golfers put themselves right off of the green today. Daniel (Timmons) was a wonderful surprise. He got his chance a couple of weeks ago by coincidence but he has proven himself a strong performer. This is the time of the year where it really gets fun. It's funs to play when the stakes are high."
Play will conclude with the final round tomorrow. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. and final results will be available by 4:30 p.m. pacific time.
