FRESNO, Calif. - FINAL HOME MEET
The Bulldogs will host their final home meet of the season on Saturday, May 5, in Warmerdam Field. Cal Poly and CS Northridge are slated to participate in the tri-meet.
`DOGS LAND 10th AT CAL-NEVADA
The 2001 Cal-Nevada Championships were held at UC Irvine, in Irvine, Calif., on Saturday, April 28, and Sunday, April 29. The `Dogs tallied 36 points, en route to a 10th place finish.
TWO WORDS- KAYLA, RUSSUM
Junior Kayla Russum (Lake Stevens, Calif.) specializes in the javelin throw. At the Cal-Nevada Championships on Sunday, April 29, Russum demonstrated just how good she is. She speared a NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 155-5, while earning first place. She soared past the qualifying mark of 152-7 by three feet, while improving her own personal-best by four feet. The new personal-best mark puts her in the eighth place on the career leaders' list, tying her with Erika Spence. Along with the PQ throw, Russum earned her fourth, first place finish out of six meets.
LOOK AT GRAYSON-REED GO
Senior Jynette Grayson-Reed (Stockton, Calif.) took second in the 400 meters at Cal-Nevada with a time of 55.14. She has already provisionally qualified in the event with a time of 53.60, a time she clocked while at Sacramento State on March 24. Her PQ also earned her the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week for the week of March 26, 2001, and moved her up to the fourth spot on the career leaders' list. She leads the team in every sprinting event this season.
GIVE IT UP FOR THE HEPTATHLETES
Junior Rachel Bauer (Clovis, Calif.) tallied 4,377 points en route to her fourth place in the heptathlon portion of Cal-Nevada. Bauer's top performances came with a first place crown in the 800 meters as she clocked a season-best time of 2:18.86. She also earned third place in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 121-0. Bauer currently ranks 10th on the career leaders' list in the event with 4,546 points. Freshman Jenny Moore (Upland, Calif.) competed for the first time in the event and came away with 3,928 points and sixth place. Moore finished first in the 100-meter hurdles at 15.64 and tied for first in the high jump after a personal-best height of 5-3.
FROM A DISTANCE
Freshman Olga Gutierrez (Visalia, Calif.) has taken the reigns and is leading the `Dogs in both the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters. At Cal-Nevada, the distance runner clocked a personal-best 17:51.99 and a sixth pace finish in the 5,000. She owns a personal-best record of 10:18.37 in the 3,000.
THE THREE AMIGOS
The women's track and field team has three provisional qualifiers this season. Grayson-Reed earned her provisional mark in the 400 meters with a time of 53.60. Freshman Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) clocked a personal-best 11:01.33 in the steeplechase. She became the first woman in Fresno State history to win the event, as it is the first season to feature the women's distance challenge. The most recent avenger is Russum, with her 155-5 spear in the javelin throw. She moved up in the career leaders' list to sit in the 10th spot, while improving her personal-best mark by just under four feet.
THE LEADER OF THE PACK
Of the 19 individual events, there are 12 different leaders on the women's squad. Grayson-Reed leads the way in the 100 meters, 200 meters and 400. Senior Brianna Denley (Pruneldale, Calif.) holds the 800 meters top spot, while June reigns the 1,500 meters and steeplechase events. Gutierrez leads the way in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters. Senior Tamisha Allen (Salinas, Calif.) is holding strong in the 100-meter hurdles, with Bauer leading in the 400-meter hurdles. Moore has the honors in the high jump, while counterpart, sophomore Crystal Simmons (Barstow, Calif.) is tops in both the long and triple jump events. Freshman Lexine Lessar (Hanford, Calif.) stands tall in the pole vault. Freshman Krissy Schelir (Fresno, Calif.) owns the top seed in both the shot put and discus. Russum is undoubtedly the top spot in the javelin, with junior Andrea Stelter (Chase, B.C., Canada) holding it down in the hammer throw.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIPS HEADING TO FRESNO
The 2001 WAC outdoor track and field championships are headed to Fresno State. Warmerdam Field will host the championships from Wednesday, May 16, through Saturday, May 19. The last time Fresno State hosted the event was in 1994. Eight teams will be in attendance this year.
