FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State golf team has signed three recruits to national letters of intent for the 2001-02 season. With the new additions, the `Dogs will have a roster of 11 for the new season.
All of the recruits will be first-year freshmen from California, Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.), Mark Modglin (Simi Valley, Calif.) and Ian Nelson (Temecula, Calif.).
Carter is a graduate of Servite High School. He averaged 71.6 in his senior season and tied for first at the Serra League Championship.
Modglin graduated from Simi Valley High School with a 4.0 GPA. He had the lowest scoring average in the Ventura County Junior Golf Association with his 72.9 average for the year. He was selected for the LA Times All-Region Golf Team.
Nelson is a graduate of Linfield High with some great credentials. He has won several junior and men's amateur tournaments. He is the 2001 Player of the Year on the International Junior Golf Tour and the 2000 CIF All Valley Player of the Year. Recently he won the Santa Barbara County Men's Amateur at the LaPurisima Golf Course in Lompoc. His USGA Index is 1.2 strokes better than zero.
"I am really excited about the recruits for next season," head coach Mike Watney said. "These guys have great attitudes and tremendous work ethics. That's why they are good now and will continue to improve. These guys will add a lot to our one-two punch of Nick Watney and Jonathon Echols. I anticipate that two or three of them will become starters right from the beginning."
