FRESNO, Calif. - It was a good night for the offense. Fresno State held its second scrimmage of fall camp Monday under the lights at Bulldog Stadium in which the offense looked crisp. Over 1,000 fans attended the scrimmage, the last open scrimmage of fall camp.
"I thought we competed very hard," head coach Pat Hill said. "I was especially proud of that because we have been working hard and I know the guys are tired. We have had 16 practices and we have run a lot of plays. It was very competitive. We are working at a good pace and right now we need to start to zero in on Colorado and get ready for them, I feel good where we are right now."
The Bulldogs worked on several situations during the scrimmage, including over the field, goal line situations and two-minute offense.
Senior quarterback David Carr was especially sharp during the two-minute drill segment at the end of the scrimmage directing the offense two a pair of touchdown strikes. Carr connected with sophomore tight end Jeremy Johnson for a 25 yard touchdown and to junior receiver Bernard Berrian for a 24 yard touchdown pass.
Highlights of the scrimmage were:
- Freshman running back James Cummings ran for two touchdowns of 3 and 4 yards.
- Quarterback Jeff Grady connected with tight end Alec Greco on a 3 yard touchdown pass.
- Running back Therrian Fonteno had several impressive runs including a 20-yarder.
- Quarterback Nate Ray had a 6 yard touchdown run.
- Running backs Josh Levi and Paris Gaines each had short touchdown runs.
- Safety Cameron Worrell and cornerback Devon Banks each had fumble recoveries.
Starting guard Fitu Tu'ua and safety Anthony Limbrick were two notable players not in uniform as each was nursing a sore hamstring. The only injury during the scrimmage was that of senior receiver Charles Smith who suffered an injured knee. His will be reevaluated on Tuesday according to athletics trainer Miguel Rueda.
The Bulldogs will return to practice on Tuesday evening with a special teams practice. The remainder of Fresno State's practices throughout fall camp will be closed to the media and the public.
The Bulldogs will open the season on Aug. 26 at Colorado in the Jim Thorpe Association Classic. Season tickets are available through the Bulldog Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS or online at gobulldogs.com.
