Berrian Earns WAC Accolades

DENVER - Fresno State receiver Bernard Berrian and Rice strong safety Greg Gatlin were named the offensive and defensive players of the week, respectively. Berrian was also named the special teams player of the week.
Berrian, a junior from Winton, Calif. (Atwater HS), had 300 all-purpose yards in Fresno State's 32-20 win at Wisconsin. On offense, he had eight receptions for 102 yards and two carries for 16 yards. It was Berrian's sixth 100-yard receiving game in his last nine games. On special teams, he had four kick returns for 153 yards and two punt returns for 29 yards. Berrian opened the second half with a 96-yard kickoff return for a touchdown that helped the Bulldogs climb back from a 20-10 halftime deficit. It was the first kickoff return for a touchdown by Fresno State since 1998.
Gatlin, a junior from Houston (St. Thomas HS), had eight tackles, including six solo, one sack, a forced fumble, one pass deflection and one interception in a 15-13 win over Duke. The interception came with 16 second left at the Rice 33-yard line to preserve the victory. Rice is now 2-0 on the year for the first time since 1991.
Other offensive nominees included junior wide receiver Ashley Lelie, Hawai'i, senior running back/wide receiver John Simon, Louisiana Tech, freshman running back Chance Kretschmer, Nevada, and junior running back Sherman Austin, UTEP.
On the defensive side, nominees included junior linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa, Hawai'i, senior cornerback Devon Banks, Fresno State, junior linebacker Gerome Wallace, Louisiana Tech, sophomore defensive back Ronnie Hardiman, Nevada, and sophomore defensive lineman Dan Kerr, UTEP.
Special team nominations included sophomore kick returner David Mikell, Boise State, sophomore punter Mat McBriar, Hawai'i, sophomore place kicker Josh Scobee, Louisiana Tech, junior punter Travis Hale, Rice, and freshman punt returner Jahmal Fenner, UTEP.
