FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State men's and women's tennis teams combined forces to go 2-0 today at the World Team Tennis National Collegiate Championships in San Diego.
The tournament features 16 teams competing head-to-head using the World Team Tennis (WTT) format. The concept, originated by Billie Jean King and Larry King, features teams comprised of two men, two women and a coach. Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. One point is awarded for each game won. A nine-point tiebreaker is played if a match reached 5-5.
The Bulldogs got their day started by taking out Santa Clara 26-12. The women's doubles team of Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer, ranked No. 1 in the nation, defeated the Broncos duo of Christine Limbers and Janale Kaloi 6-0. Also winning for Fresno State was Nick Fustar and Alex Krohn in men's doubles, Niggemeyer in women's singles and Fustar and Niggemeyer in mixed doubles.
In Fresno State's second match of the day, it took out Princeton 26-17. The Bulldogs followed the same format as they did against Santa Clara, with FS posting wins in men's, women's and mixed doubles and in women's singles.
"The World Team Tennis concept is a challenging and exciting format for all the players," Fresno State head women's tennis coach Kevin Epley said. "It's fast paced and gets both men's and women's teams involved in the outcome of the match. The Team Tennis format has worked at the professional level, and I think college players enjoy playing it, too."
The Bulldogs will take on Oklahoma State, also winners of both its matches today, tomorrow at 9 a.m. Fresno State will play a to be determined opponent in the bracket semifinals at 2 p.m.
