BERKELEY, Calif. - Fresno State dropped its fourth match in a row after starting the season 2-0. Cal forward Laura Schott accounted for both scores as the Bulldogs fell 2-0. It marked the second week in a row Fresno State faced a top-10 nationally ranked opponent.
The Bulldogs were hampered by fouls all day committing 10 of the 15 in the first half. The biggest foul came in the 17:51 mark. The Bulldogs fouled a Cal forward in the penalty area to set up Laura Schott's first goal.
The Bulldog defense slowed down the Golden Bear offense in the first half holding them to only five shots despite the two goals. The scoring drought, however, continued as Fresno State was shut out for the second straight match.
"I'm very pleased with the way our defense is playing right now," said Coach Welp, "We're having a tough time keeping the ball in the forward area and it's really hurting our scoring chances."
The match against Cal concluded the four games road trip that saw the Bulldogs face opponents with a 17-2-1 combined record including No. 4 Stanford and No. 8 Cal.
With the loss the Bulldogs fall to 2-4 on the year. Cal improves to 7-1 this season. Up next Fresno State will be back at home Sunday, at 7 p.m. against UCSB. This will be Fresno State's second match at home this season.
