FRESNO, Calif. - The teams used the WTT format at these national championships. The team tennis concept, originated by Billie Jean King, who was on hand throughout the tournament, and Larry King, features teams comprised of at least two men, two women and a coach. Each team match consists of five sets, with one set each of men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. The WTT format features fan-friendly rules such as cumulative scoring, substitution, overtime and supertiebreakers.
For the fourth consecutive match, the Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead thanks to the nation's top-ranked doubles team of Simone Jardim and Kim Niggemeyer, who defeated OCU's Marisue Jacutin and Anne Laure Legunnec 6-0. Nick Fustar then made the FS lead 12-5 when he defeated Arnaud L'Official 6-5.
After Oklahoma City won the men's doubles, Niggemeyer defeated Jacutin 6-3 to make the team score 21-14. The mixed doubles team of Niggemeyer and Fustar clinched the win for the Bulldogs with a 6-4 win.
Next up for the women's team is the ITA All-American championships in Los Angeles on Oct. 11-14. For the men, the Wathen/Hancock Bulldog Classic awaits Friday through Sunday at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
