FRESNO, Calif. - Tulsa held Fresno State to just 33 percent shooting and put on an offensive and defensive display of its own on the way to a 72-49 victory over the Bulldogs at the North Gym. The loss was the FS's third in a row and fourth in the last five games.
The Bulldogs' downfall was manufactured primarily by an offense that produced the lowest point total since FS scored 49 at Hawai`i on Feb. 9, 2001. Only one Fresno State player scored in double figures, that being Lindsay Logan, who finished with 13 points.
The Golden Hurricane (12-8, 7-3 WAC) came out of the blocks strong, jumping to an eight-point lead just six minutes into the contest. Conversely, for the second Thursday in a row, the Bulldogs (8-12, 3-7 WAC) started the game ice cold, missing 11 of their first 15 shots. Despite the poor start, however, Fresno State managed to hang around, and with 4:09 to go in the half, Tiffany Simon hit a jumper to cut TU's lead to four.
But a Fresno State timeout after the Simon jumper only seemed to infuse life in the Golden Hurricane. They ran off 12 consecutive points to jump to a 38-22 lead, which eventually was cut to 38-24 at the half.
The Bulldogs succeeded in cutting the lead into single digits just once in the second half, that coming with 9 minutes 13 seconds remaining when a Logan layup made it 49-41. But on back-to-back possessions, Tulsa guard Bethanie Bentz nailed three-pointers from the corner, pushing the lead back to 14 and putting a lid on the game.
Fresno State had trouble shooting all night, hitting on only 33 percent of its field goals. In addition, the Bulldogs, who lead the WAC in three-pointers per game, were just 1-of-13 from beyond the arc.
Excellent performances abounded for the Hurricane. Leela Farr har 17 points and six rebounds while Carla Morrow also had 17, including 15 in the first half. Becky Heidotten came off the bench to add a double-double with 12 points and 15 rebounds.
Next for Fresno State is a game against Rice (13-6, 7-3 WAC) on Saturday at 4 p.m. at the North Gym.
