After the final round of the Fresno State-Lexus Golf Classic, Fresno State took the championship with a final score of 870 (289-295-286). Trailing behind by two strokes from Fresno State was UTEP with a final score of 872 (294-286-292).
Other schools that competed were Colorado State with a score of 875 (294-291-290), San Diego State with a score of 877 (292-288-297), BYU with a score of 877 (291-291-295), Univ. of Denver with a score of 882 (296-291-295), Augusta State with a score of 883 (303-293-287), Arizona State with a score of 884 (305-288-291), UOP with a score of 885 (293-298-294), Notre Dame with a score 885 (288-294-303, San Jose State with a score of 888 (301-297-290), Univ. of Utah with a score of 891 (304-296-291), Univ. of Nevada with a score of 899 (314-284-301), UC- Santa Barbara with a score of 900 (305-303-292), Long Beach State with a score of 903 (301-298-304), Louisiana-Monroe with a score of 912 (305-308-299), Fresno State #2 with a score of 921 (319-302-300), and Univ. of Hawaii with a score of 927 (312-306-309) respectively finishing first through 18th.
"This was very exciting," coach Mike Watney said. " A long time golf expert called this final round a masterpiece. And indeed it was."
Individually, senior Nick Watney ran away with the title with a final score of 204 (69-70-65), 12 strokes under par. Junior Chad Spencer finished three spots under Watney tying for third with a score of 210 (68-72-70), six strokes under par.
"I am very happy to have won and having the team behind me was even more special," said Nick Watney. "Today was the best round and it was very rewarding."
"The key to our victory was Nick and Chad, making six birdies on the back nine together," said coach Watney.
"I can't say enough about Nick, he beat the tournament's record at this course by six strokes."
The next action for the 'Dogs will be Mon.- Tues. Oct. 14-15 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational hosted by Cal.
