Golf Team Hosts First Home Tournament This Week

THIS WEEK IN GOLF
Fresno State is hosting its first and only home tournament this week. The Fresno State-Lexus Classic is Fri.-Sat., Oct.11-12, at the San Joaquin Country Club. Last year Fresno State ran way with the team championship (834) by an outstanding margin of 40 strokes over Stanford University (874). Senior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) won the individual title with a score of 203 (71-63-69).
OTHERS THAT ARE ATTENDING
Fresno State has invited 16 schools to participate in this week's tournament. Among them are Arizona State, BYU, Colorado State, Louisiana-Monroe, Notre Dame, San Diego State, UC Santa Barbara, Hawai'i, Nevada, Pacific, UTEP, Augusta State, Long Beach State, San Jose State, Utah, and Denver. Among these schools, nine return: Nevada (T2, 874); Pacific (T2, 874); San Diego State (5th, 876); UC Santa Barbara (6th, 877); San Jose State (8th, 884); Colorado State (10th, 887); Arizona (13th, 901); Hawai'i (14th, 902); and Utah (16th, 915).
WATNEY INVITED TO ALL-AMERICA GOLF CLASSIC
Watney has been invited to the Western Refining College All-America Golf Classic, which will be held in El Paso, Texas, Nov. 25-26. There will be 24 All-Americans participating in this tournament. Watney finished second last year with a score of 203 (68-65-70).
GOLFWORLD MAGAZINE RANKS WATNEY NO. 2 IN NATION
Watney has been ranked No. 2 in the nation in the the Sept. 6 issue of GolfWorld Magazine's collegiate golf rankings. Watney has posted three wins and 13 top ten finishes this past season. Above him ranked No.1, lies D.J. Trahan from Clemson who has set the school single-seaon marks in wins, and sub-70 rounds. Watney defeated Trahan in the Topy Cup Tournament earlier in the season.
BULLDOGS TAKE SEVENTH IN TOLEDO
The 2002 Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational was held in Toledo, Ohio, Sept 16-17. The Inverness Club is a 54-hole course with 15 teams competing. Fresno State finished with a score of 896, 18 strokes under Florida, which finished first with a score 878.
BULLDOGS PLACED FIFTH AT TOPY CUP
The golf team opened its 2002-03 season at the Topy Cup, which was held in Tanagura, Japan, Sept. 3-5. Among the schools from the U.S. competing in the 11-team Topy Cup Tournament were 2002 NCAA champions Minnesota, 2002 NCAA runner-up Clemson, Arizona State and Fresno State. Clemson finished first with a score of 830, Minnesota placed fifth with a score of 861, Fresno State finished sixth with a final score of (874) and Arizona State finished seventh (878).
