HOUSTON, Tex.- Fresno State put forth an incredible effort but fell short in its upset bid of regular season conference champion SMU on Friday night, dropping a hard-fought 2-1 double-overtime decision to the Mustangs in the semifinals of the 2002 WAC Women's Soccer Championship.
The fifth-seeded Bulldogs close out the season at 8-13-0 overall, with a 5-3-0 record in WAC competition. Top-seeded SMU improves to 11-5-4, 6-1-1 WAC for the season and advances to the tournament final on Saturday. The Bulldogs finished the season by winning six of its final eight matches.
"I was very pleased with our girls tonight," said Fresno State head coach Stacy Welp. "For us to play the way we did having already had a game in the tournament under our belts was an outstanding effort. We had our chances late in the game and in overtime but they were just able to put the ball in first."
SMU's Sasha Andrews connected off Jill Heinemann's corner kick with just over three minutes remaining before a possible penalty-kick shootout to give the Mustangs a 2-1 win. SMU outshot Fresno State 3-0 in both overtime periods combined.
The Mustangs controlled the flow of the game through the first half, holding a 9-3 advantage in the shot department. Kim Harvey gave SMU the early 1-0 lead, drilling a shot into the net at the 6:03 mark of the first half.
The Bulldogs challenged in the second half and were able to set the pace in the early going with several scoring chances. Freshman Eriko Yoshiki (Satte City, Japan) fired a shot towards the open net that was deflected at the last second by an SMU defender and freshman Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) nearly missed a goal on a free kick when her shot sailed high over the crossbar.
It looked as if SMU, which boasted the conference's stingiest defense through the regular season, would easily preserve the shutout. However, the Bulldogs would continue to stay in the game and with just over a minute left in regulation, sophomore Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) headed the ball into the goal following a free kick from junior Kristyn Kellogg (Atascadero, Calif.) to knot the game at 1-1 and force overtime.
Both teams went scoreless in the first overtime and appeared to be heading to penalty kicks before SMU's Andrews knocked home the game-winner at 106:54.
SMU outshot Fresno State 22-8 for the contest and held a 3-2 edge in corner kicks. The game featured 29 total fouls, with the Mustangs committing 17.
Fresno State goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.) turned in a solid outing between the posts for the Bulldogs with six saves.
The contest also represented the final match for Fresno State seniors Virginia Jenkins (Lompoc, Calif.), Amber Karlsson (Clovis, Calif.), Susan Shivokevich (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and Mary-tyler Wahl (Riverside, Calif.).
