Tough Competition Ahead for Men's Tennis

The Bulldogs go on the road to face No. 11 California on Friday and No. 2 Stanford on Saturday. Stanford is having an impressive season so far, winning the ITA National Team Indoors Championships last weekend. Previous to that, the Cardinal defeated No. 12 USC 4-2 and No. 9 Duke 6-1. Cal also competed in the Indoor Tournament, but fell in the first round to Illinois 4-1 and again to Indiana State 4-3 in the consolation round. Against Stanford, Fresno State has an 0-9 record. The Bulldogs record against Cal is 7-8.
Fustar Awarded WAC Player of the Week
Nick Fustar's upset over No. 13 Marcin Matkowski of UCLA has not gone unnoticed. The WAC named him as athlete of the week and Fustar also moved up to the No. 1 position in the Fresno State lineup. He continued his winning streak on Saturday against Cal Poly and Nevada. Against Cal Poly, he beat out Merenoff 6-1, 6-1 and defeated Nevada's Stoloff 6-1, 6-2. "Nick showed leadership today. He set the tone in singles and doubles. The rest of the team feeds off of his great attitude," said Dancer.
Double Sweep for Fresno State at Home Opener
The Bulldogs definitely came through for the fans last weekend as they competed at home against Cal Poly and Nevada, winning all of their matches in the double-header. Hector Almada, playing at No. 3 in the lineup, came from behind at the end to take an exciting victory over Cal Poly's Marquez 6-4, 6-4. The only struggle for the Bulldogs in singles came at the No. 5 position. After Greg Shearer split the first two sets, he won the tie-breaker 10-8. Freshman Dustin Ilic had his collegiate home debut on Saturday and made a sucessful transition from high school to college. In singles, he defeated Cal Poly's Daniel Levy 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 6 position and McClure Wallace of Nevada 7-5, 6-3 at the No. 5 position. Against Cal Poly, the Bulldogs have a winning record, going 9-4 against the Mustangs. Fresno State has now gone 5-0 against Nevada.
Season Opens With Back to Back Matches Against USC and UCLA
Competiton for the spring began last Wednesday in Los Angeles against No. 12 USC. The Bulldogs lost 6-1, with Hector Almada winning his match against Prakash Armitraj 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3. Almada, playing in his first match as a Bulldog, is a sophmore transfer from Fresno City College. Fresno State now has a 4-13 record against the Spartans. On Thursday the men met the No. 3 Bruins. Once again they went 1-6. Nick Fustar, had an impressive win at the No. 2 spot, defeating Marcin Matakowski, ranked No. 13 in the nation. In doubles, Nick Fustar and Dustin Ilic defeated the duo of Clemens and Ketola, 8-4, but the team still lost the point. Against UCLA, Fresno State has gone 0-15 since 1984.
