FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (4-6) was shut down by Stanford (7-3) LHP Tim Cunningham, as the Cardinal take game three 8-3. Stanford takes its third consecutive series this season with a 2-1 edge over Fresno State. This marks the third series this season the Bulldogs lose 2-1.
Cunningham had the Bulldog bats under control the whole day, not allowing a runner to reach third base until the eighth inning. Cunningham pitched 7.2 innings allowing three runs, none earned, and striking out six batters.
On the other end, FS starter senior RHP Francisco Nieves (Oakland, Calif.) wasn't so fortunate lasting just 2.1 innings while giving up five runs and suffering his first loss of the season.
Stanford built an early 5-0 lead getting one in the second and four in the third.
In the third inning third baseman Andy Topham hit a two-run home run and outfielder Carlos Quentin singled in a run to account for three of the Cardinal's four runs in the inning.
Sophomore Mike Hernandez (Fresno, Calif.) came in relief in the third inning and gave the Bulldogs 6.1 innings allowing three runs.
Hernandez only mistakes came on two home run balls he served to infielder Donny Lucy and Quentin.
Fresno State did manage a late rally in the eighth inning. Junior first baseman Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) walked with the bases loaded, followed by a two-run single by sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Aptos, Calif.). The rally would go no further, however, ending with a ground out by senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White (Berkeley, Calif.)
Fritz, who went 0-for-3, ended his nine game hitting streak, dating back to opening day.
Sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) and Riday-White both extended their hit streaks to eight games.
The Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend for a three game set against Washington, starting Friday, Feb. 22 at 7:05 p.m.
