Men's Tennis Sweeps Cal Poly and Nevada in Home Opener

FRESNO, Calif. - In the first match against Cal Poly, Fresno State came out strong in doubles, with the duo of Alex Krohn and Hector Almada finishing unchallenged at 8-0 against Cal Poly's Greg Levy and Erin Carroll. Nick Fustar and Dustin Ilic defeated Davey James and Mike Marquez 8-3. Stefan Suta and newcomer Greg Shearer had a close battle against Stacey Merenoff and Nick Tracy, but managed an 8-6 win over the Mustang duo.
In the singles events against Cal Poly, Fresno State also had a clean sweep. Fustar, moving up in the lineup after his impressive win against No. 13 Marcin Matkowski of UCLA, played at the No. 1 position. He beat out Merenoff 6-1, 6-1. Suta took out Jones 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 2 position. Almada, playing at No. 3 in the lineup, came from behind at the end to take the victory over Marquez 6-4, 6-4. Krohn cruised past Carroll 6-2, 6-1. The only struggle for the Bulldogs in singles came at the No. 5 position. After Greg Shearer split the first two sets, he won the tie-breaker 10-8.
Against Nevada, the Bulldogs also won all of their doubles matches, with Hector Almada and Alex Krohn teaming up again to take down Chad Stoloff and Jason Yelley. Fustar and Ilic defeated Rudi Leuschner and Daniel Ericson 8-6. Vince Owens replaced Greg Shearer and teamed up with Suta against Mc Clure Wallace and Brett Bitzer, defeating the Wolfpack duo 8-3. Head coach Brad Dancer said of Vinny's performance, "I asked him to bring energy out to the court and he did. He played great."
In singles, the Bulldogs also went unanswered against Nevada. Nick Fustar beat out Stoloff 6-1, 6-2. "Nick showed leadership today. He set the tone in singles and doubles. The rest of the team feeds off of his great attitude," said Dancer. Stefan Suta defeated Leuschner 6-2, 6-1. Hector Almada, playing at No. 3 in the lineup, cruised past Yellet with a 6-0, 6-3 finish. Alex Krohn took out Ericson 6-3, 6-4.
The matches that posed a struggle for the Bulldogs took place at positions five and six in the lineup. Vince Owens finally ended up with a victory over Bitzer 6-4, 6-4 and Dustin Ilic managed a 7-5, 6-3 win over Wallace.
