FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State will continue its home schedule this weekend as it hosts Washington for a three-game set. These two have not faced each other since 1997 and only faced each other eight times overall, splitting those games 4-4.
"They're a skilled group of guys with a lot of veteran strength and a good pitching staff, so they'll be a formidable foe. They're always tough in the Pac-10 conference," said Coach Bennett.
Fresno State is coming off a three-game series with Stanford in which they took one of the three games.
Since batting .228 as a team after the first series of the season, FS has raised its average by almost 60 points and is now batting .282.
"We're hitting the ball better and our pitching is slowly starting to connect now and get consistent. Sean Ruthven has looked good and Mike Hernandez has made great improvements since the beginning of the season. We're also making some progress with Minor and Nieves behind the scenes and they should be ready to step in and do a good job," said Bennett.
Freshman Sean Ruthven (Alpharetta, Ga.) and sophomore Mike Hernandez (Fresno, Calif.) combined to pitch 16 innings in relief last week against Cal Poly and Stanford. Ruthven did allow a run in 2.2 innings and struck out two batters. Hernandez went 13.1 innings picking up a win and a save allowing only three earned runs.
The series is scheduled for Fri.-Sun. at 7:05 p.m., 1:05 p.m. and 1:05 p.m., respectively.
