FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (6-9) ran into another All-American pitcher in Nebraska (4-3) RHP Shane Komine. The Bulldogs managed an unearned run on three hits against Komine as they fell 7-1.
"He did a great job of pitching and we didn't do much offensively. We weren't aggressive at the plate," said Coach Bennett.
Senior RHP Bob Runyon suffered his fourth loss of the season going 7.2 innings, allowing seven runs, six earned, and striking out three.
Fresno State's only run came in the first inning when senior outfielder Tobey Riday-White singled in junior catcher Ben Fritz, who had reached on an error.
From then on Komine kept the Bulldogs at bay, allowing just one hit and strking out eight batters.
Nebraska built a 4-1 lead through four innings. They scored two in the second off a double by second baseman Will Bolt and a single by outfielder Jeff Leise.
The score remained 4-1 until the eighth inning when Nebraska put the game away with a two-run homer by Leise.
"We let the game get away from us early. We didn't turn a double play and misplayed a couple of balls. You can't do that against a guy like [Komine]. They were aggressive at the plate and hit the ball well," said Bennett.
Fresno State and Nebraska will continue their series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m.
