FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (6-10) was baffled once again offensively managing just one hit in the 9-0 loss against Nebraska (5-3). LHP Jamie Rodrigue was the story, tossing a complete game one-hitter and also setting the Cornhusker all-time mark for career shutouts with five.
Sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) managed the only hit of the night for Fresno State. The Bulldogs had four batters reach base the whole game on a hit, two walks and a hit batter.
"It's hard to explain. We're anemic at the plate right now. [Rodriue] got the ball over and changed speeds and we didn't adjust to it," said Coach Bennett.
Junior RHP Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) suffered his second loss of the season going 4.1 innings allowing five runs with four being earned and striking out three.
Nebraska got its first two runs in the first inning on a double by first baseman Matt Hopper and the other on a fielding error by freshman second baseman Carl Lipsey (Fresno, Calif.).
The Cornhuskers would add three more in the fourth inning on back-to-back solo homers by Hopper and outfielder Justin Seely and an RBI single by third baseman Brandon Eymann.
That would knock Fritz out of the ballgame and bring in sophomore LHP Mike Hernandez (Fresno, Calif.) who had Nebraska under control until the ninth inning when outfielder Daniel Bruce put the game out of reach with a grand slam.
"There's not much you can say about this one. We just didn't play well and didn't do much," said Bennett.
The Bulldogs and Cornhuskers will conclude their series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
