FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (11-12) made it five in row as it downed UC Santa Barbara (11-12) 10-3, Wednesday night. On a cold, windy night at Pete Beiden Field the Bulldogs swept through divisional play going 3-0 with wins against Gonzaga and Illinois State the first two days.
FS has been doing it with hitting through the tournament scoring nine runs on Monday and 10 on Tuesday.
"We're being aggressive right now at the plate. We got a good approach going and we just have to keep it going," said sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee.
The Bulldogs also got a solid performance from senior RHP Zach Minor (Walnut Creek, Calif.) who went 8.1 innings allowing just three runs. It was Minor's longest outing of the season.
"I was just trying to keep the ball down and put some zero's on the board. It's nice to pitch with a big lead. You don't have to try and do everything yourself and you can try to get groundouts instead of striking out everybody," said Minor.
UCSB looked to make a game out of it, scoring two in the third to cut FS's lead to 3-2. Outfielder Andy Campanella came home on a wild pitch to score the first run and second baseman Chris Malec drove in the second run on a groundout.
The Bulldogs would respond in their half of the third inning, however, scoring four to extend the lead to 7-2.
The Bulldogs used three singles by juniors designated hitter Brian Pierce (Fresno, Calif.), T.J. Boyd (Kingsburg, Calif.) and outfielder Joey Myers to drive in thr four runs.
The heart of the order was the motor for Fresno State through the game, accounting for seven of the Bulldogs' 10 runs. McGehee, junior first baseman Ben Fritz, and Pierce each had at least one hit and each drove in at least one run each.
Fritz and McGehee both homered in the game. Fritz' home run came in the first inning as he blasted a 3-2 pitch into left field to drive in two runs.
McGehee's homer came in the fourth inning, which upped FS's lead to 9-2. McGehee would add the Bulldogs' final run of the night in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly.
The Gauchos would make one final run in the ninth on a double by pinch hitter Blair Havens, but junior LHP David Bair (Merced, Calif.) would come in to record the final two outs and cut short the UCSB rally.
