Tough Loss At Home For Men's Tennis

FRESNO, Calif. - No. 35 Northwestern came back from a 3-1 deficit to escape with a 4-3 victory over Fresno State at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The loss drops the Bulldogs' record to 4-13.
The Bulldogs got off to a great start by winning two out of three in doubles, taking the doubles point. Nick Fustar and Dustin Ilic, currently ranked 44th nationally, took down Tom Hanus and Russell Bennett 8-5 on court one. Hector Almada and Stefan Suta were also victorious, defeating Jackie Jenkins and Chuck Perrin 8-5. On the third court, Alex Krohn and Greg Shearer fought a tough battle against Ryan Edelfsen and Josh Axler, but eventually lost 9-7.
The singles matches proved to be more challenging for Fresno State. Nick Fustar quickly fell to Hanus 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Almada pulled off a big win against Edelfsen, taking him down 6-4, 6-2. Suta fell in three sets at the No. 3 position, with Sahara going 6-7, 6-4, 6-2 against the sophomore. On the backcourts, Krohn took down Axler with a strong 6-2, 6-4 finish. Shearer lost to Hol 6-4, 8-6. On court No. 6 Ilic pushed it to three sets but couldn't manage the win, losing to Perrin 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Next week holds two more matches for the Bulldogs in southern California. They will take on No. 11 Pepperdine April 5 and UC Santa Barbara on April 6.
