Golf Team Places Fourth in Cleveland Golf SW Intercollegiate

FRESNO, Calif. - The golf team completed play today in the Cleveland Golf Southwestern Intercollegiate at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. The team played a total of 54 holes in the two-day tournament. The course is par 71.
After the final round, the team finished in fourth place out of 16 teams with a score of 876. Host USC won the tournament with 864. Oregon and Washington tied for second with 867. Rounding out the top five is Cal with 883.
There were 81 total golfers in the tournament. Brock Mackenzie of Washington won the tournament. He shot 71-68-69-208. Bulldog junior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) tied for second place in the tournament with USC's Kevin Stadler. Watney shot 72-70-69-211 and Stadler shot 75-68-68-211.
Freshman Ryan Carter (Hacienda Heights, Calif.) broke out today as he shot a final round 71. He placed 17th and shot a 75-74-71-220 in the tournament. This was the second collegiate golf tournament in his career. He tied with Alabama-Birmingham's Graeme McDowell who is ranked No. 6 by Golfweek. Carter also tied with Cal's Walter Chun. Carter's first collegiate tournament was the Fresno Lexus Golf Classic where he placed 51st out of 98 golfers.
"For Ryan to finish 17th in his second collegiate tournament is pretty tremendous," coach Mike Watney said.
Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) finished in 24th place with 72-74-76-222. Sophomore Chad Spencer (Rocklin Calif.) finished in 54th place and shot 73-78-78-229. Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) placed 68th and shot 74-87-73-234.
The team moves to Santa Barbara on March 7-8 for the "Bite" Pacific Coast Invitational.
