FRESNO, Calif. - New Fresno State women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson began rounding out her staff today by naming Adrian Wiggins assistant coach. Wiggins had served as the head coach at Cameron University, a Division II school in Lawton, Okla., for the past two seasons.
A native of Lawton, Wiggins' appointment at Fresno State reunites her with Johnson, for whom he served as an assistant coach at Cameron during the 1999-00 year. The tandem team to lead the Aggies to a 13-13 record, their most successful season in a decade.
"Adrian and I worked very well together at Cameron, and I knew he would be the first person I would hire when I became a Division I head coach," Johnson said. "He's proven he can be successful both as a head coach and as a recruiter, and together we'll make a powerful team at Fresno State.
"He emulates the characteristics I look for in an assistant coach. He's a family man and is driven to make this women's basketball program successful."
After Johnson left to become an assistant coach at Louisiana Tech after the 1999-00 season, Wiggins was named CU's head coach, a position in which he excelled. In his first year at the helm, Cameron went 15-12 and qualified for the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament.
Last season, Wiggins helped lead CU to its second best record in program history and the Lone Star Conference's North Division title. The Aggies finished 25-5 and received a berth in the NCAA Division II Championships for the first time in their history. Cameron defeated Angelo State 80-73 in the first round before falling 64-61 to Saint Mary's (Texas).
"I am grateful to have the opportunity to coach at the Division I level," Wiggins said. "A lot of coaches dream of being at this level, but not all get the opportunity. I'm very excited about making our program successful and getting this community enthusiastic about our team."
Wiggins began his coaching career at Lawton High School, where he served as an assistant coach during the 1996-97 season. Wiggins was promoted to head coach the following year at Lawton High, serving as the Wolverines' skipper for two seasons before moving to Johnson's coaching staff at CU.
A 1995 graduate of Cameron, Wiggins received his bachelor's degree in psychology and was a four-year member of the Aggie baseball squad. He also received a master of science degree in alternative studies from CU in science in 2001.
He and his wife, Heather, have a three-year old daughter, Aubrey, and a four-month old son, William.
