FRESNO, Calif. - New Fresno State women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson rounded out her assistant coaching staff today by naming Brett Frank and Miranda Serna as assistant coaches.
Frank comes to Fresno State from Southeastern Oklahoma State University, a Division II school in Durant, Okla. He served as assistant coach there from 1994-97 and 1998-02, helping lead the team to a 198-51 record and a runner-up finish in the 2002 NCAA Division II Tournament. Under Frank, the Lady Savages were Lone Star Conference champions from 1998-01 and were the national runner-up in the 1995 and '96 NAIA Championships.
The Bokchito, Okla., native also spent time as head women's basketball coach at Rock Creek Junior High School from 1996-97 and at Rock Creek High School from 1997-98. At RCJHS, he helped guide the program to a 20-0 record, the school's first ever undefeated season. One season later at RCHS, Frank led the team to a 19-10 mark and a district and regional championship.
Frank is a 1995 graduate of Southeastern Oklahoma State. He received his bachelor of science degree in education.
"I am thrilled at this opportunity," Frank said. "To be able to coach at a Division I program is something I have always wanted to do. I am confident we can turn Fresno State into a power on the West Coast."
Serna served as the top assistant and recruiting coordinator at Chicago State last year, helping lead the Lady Cougars to a semifinal appearance in the Mid-Continent Conference Tournament. She has ties to the West Coast from her days at Long Beach State, where she served as an assistant from 1999-01. During her stay, the 49ers went 39-24 and made an appearance in the 2000 WNIT, eventually reaching the third round.
The Guadalupita, N.M., native has also been an assistant coach at Trinity Valley Community College from 1997-99 and the coach of Team Texas during the AAU Junior Olympics during the summers of 1997 and '98.
Serna received her bachelor of science degree in mathematics from Texas A&M-Commerce in 1998.
"This is an exciting chance for me to get back on the West Coast and coach at a top Division I program," Serna said. "As a coaching staff, I know we are all looking forward to quickly making this a team Fresno can be proud of. I'm very thankful for the opportunity Stacy Johnson has offered me, and I'm appreciative of the vision Scott Johnson has for giving Fresno State women's basketball the chance to compete at an elite level."
Johnson, who was named head coach April 5, began putting her staff in place Tuesday by naming Adrian Wiggins assistant coach. Wiggins came to Fresno State from Division II Cameron University, where he served as the head coach for two years and as assistant under Johnson at the school during the 1999 season.
"The addition of Frank and Miranda puts the staff in place for us to be the successful program I know we can be," Johnson said. "Each of these assistants are experienced on-court coaches, recruiters and fundraisers. And all are looking forward to the challenge of making this program a winner."
