SAN JOSE, Calif. - Two big innings for each team was the story at Municipal Stadium Saturday afternoon. Fresno State (20-18, 8-6 WAC) tallied four runs in the first inning, but were done one better as San Jose State got five in the third. With the 6-4 victory, the Spartans (28-12, 8-6 WAC) not only secured their first series win against the Bulldogs since 2000, but also tied FS for second in the WAC standings.
Junior first baseman Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) got the Bulldogs on the board in the first inning with a two-out, bases-loaded double that drove in three. It was Frtiz' 11th double of the season and most RBI since driving in four against Gonzaga, March 11.
The Bulldogs would add one more in the inning courtesy of freshman Carl Lipsey (Fresno, Calif.), who singled up the middle to drive in Fritz from second. Lipsey made his first start of the season at left field after making most his starts at second base earlier this season.
Senior RHP Bob Runyon (Atwater, Calif.) seemed to have the game in control until the third inning when the Spartans exploded for five runs. Outfielder Travis Becktel and second baseman Gabe Lopez each drove in two runs in the inning.
Lopez finished the day going 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
SJSU starter LHP Jahseam George recovered after the first inning and retired the next 18 batters. George would pitch the complete game allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five.
Fresno State put the leadoff batter on base in the final two inning, but both times grounded into double plays to end the threat.
Runyon suffered his seventh loss of the season going 6.2 innings, allowing six runs with five being earned while striking out four. Junior LHP David Bair (Merced, Calif.) pitched the final 1.1 innings not allowing a hit and striking out three.
Third baseman Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.) extended his hitting streak to 14 games, going 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Fresno State and San Jose State wrap up their series tomorrow at 1 p.m.
