FRESNO, Calif. - No. 12 Fresno State softball put an exclamation point on the art of pitching as the Bulldogs recorded a 1-0 victory over San Jose State in Western Athletic Conference play at Bulldog Diamond.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern became just the second Bulldog pitcher to post two perfect games in one season as she tossed the 11th perfect game overall in school history. Southern also notched her third no-hitter -- the 54th in the history of the Fresno State softball program -- en route to her 16th shutout in 24 wins.
Only four Bulldogs have pitched two perfect games in school history (Melanie Parrent, Amanda Scott, Wende Ward) as Southern moves into a share of most perfect games thrown in Bulldog softball (two). Southern joins Parrent as the only other Bulldog ever to collect two perfect games in one season. Still further, Southern is the 10th Bulldog pitcher to throw at least three no-hitters in a career.
Southern made her point at the plate as well by knocking in Fresno State's only run with a bloop single to left field in the third inning.
Facing 21 batters, Southern struck out seven and moves within 28 strikeouts of tying the school's single-season strikeout record of 314 set in 2000 by four-time first team All-American Amanda Scott. Southern has 286 strikeouts on the year and is averaging 8.30 strikeouts per seven innings.
Senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti tied the school's career mark in walks as she now has 106 to share the record with All-American Gina LoPiccolo (1988-91).
In the third inning, senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple led off with an infield single. Sophomore second baseman Pam Perez walked. With Fossatti reaching first on a fielder's choice, Bulldog runners were at the corners. Southern then singled to left field to score Whipple.
