Baseball Looks To Rebound At Home Against Louisiana Tech

Fresno State will be back at home for a three-game series against Louisiana Tech. All three games will be on KMJ AM 580 with Paul Loeffler and Steve Hosey.

What Just Happened
Fresno State was swept in Houston 4-0 by the Cougars and Rice. The Bulldogs dropped a Tuesday game agaisnt the Cougars 11-0. LHP Mike Hernandez was roughed up in his third start of the season going 1.1 innings while giving up six runs on six hits. Hernandez balk three times and hit a batter in the outing. During the weekend, FS was swept by Rice. It marked the seventh consecutive loss the Bulldogs have lost in Reckling Park. The Bulldogs gave up 37 runs and 42 hits during the Rice series, which were both season highs. McGehee was the lone bright spot for the Bulldogs, batting .412 last week with two RBI. Bob Runyon and Ben Fritz both snapped their winning streaks with losses last week.
All-Time Against Louisiana Tech
After never having played Tech before, Fresno State swept three from them two weeks ago. Bob Runyon tossed a three-hit shutout against the Bulldogs in game two and Ben Fritz also pitched a complete game win in the series. Casey McGehee torched LaTech in the series, batting .429 with two home runs and six RBI. Chris Patrick and Christian Hallaian also had a pair of RBI and batted over .300 in the series to contribute.
Bats Dormant in Houston
Fresno State bats were shut down by Houston and Rice pitching last week, batting .208 with just one home run. The Bulldogs were outscored 44-11 by their opponents and had just seven RBI compared to 44 by Houston and Rice combined. Ben Fritz, Tobey Riday-White and Brian Pierce were held to 5-for-39 hitting with the lone home run coming on Sunday from Pierce. Casey McGehee, Pierce and Brad Harper were the only Fresno State hitters to have multiple RBI, having two each. McGehee, Scott Beshears and Chris Patrick were the only Bulldogs to bat over .300 and have at least 10 at-bats. McGehee led the way once again for FS with a .412 batting average.
Fresno State Against Ranked Opponents
The Bulldogs are 3-11 against ranked opposition this season. They were on the road against No. 16 Cal State Fullerton and No. 21 Long Beach State. FS hosted No. 1 Stanford and No. 19 Nebraska. Fresno was swept for the second time this season by a ranked opponent, losing three straight to No. 3 Rice. Earlier this season they were swept at home by No. 19 Nebraska. The Bulldogs also failed to win a Tuesday game for the first time this season losing 11-0 to No. 5 Houston last week.
Pete Beiden Statue Day has Been Moved to New Date
On May 25, legendary Fresno State baseball coach, Pete Beiden, will be honored with the unveiling of a statue at Beiden Field. The statue will be approximately seven-feet tall on a three-foot base. It will feature Beiden with his infamous fungo bat in hand watching over the crowd as they enter the stadium. The Bulldogs will face Hawai'i that night at 7:15 p.m. The ceremony will be held prior to the game.
Game Time Change
The game time against Hawai'i on May 25 has been changed to 7:15 p.m. That day the Pete Beiden Statue will be unveiled in a pregame ceremony. The game was originally scheduled for 7:05 p.m. The original date of April 20 has been moved back to its 7:05 p.m. start time.
Bob Runyon Named WAC Pitcher of the Week (March 18-24)
RHP Bob Runyon threw his first and FS's first shutout of the season, blanking Louisiana Tech 2-0. Runyon had a no-hitter going through six innings and allowed just three hits in the game. It was his second consecutive complete game win and third win in a row. Runyon wound up facing 29 batters, two over the minimum.
Ben Fritz Named WAC Player of the Week (March 11-17)
RHP/catcher Ben Fritz helped the Bulldogs to a 6-0 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic en route to their 12th Classic title. Fritz batted .364 with two home runs and 13 RBI for the week. He also pitched his fourth cpmplete game against Oral Roberts in the semfinals.
Ben Fritz Named WAC Pitcher of the Week (March 4-10)
RHP Ben Fritz helped Fresno State win its first series of the season, defeating San Jose State 5-2. Fritz tossed his third complete game and win of the season.
Countdown to 1,300
Bob Bennett needs 13 wins to become the seventh baseball coach in NCAA division I history to reach the plateau. The Bulldogs drew three wins closer, sweeping Louisiana Tech two weeks ago.
