WOMEN
Danger, Simmons
Five events. Normally five events defines a pentathlete. However, the difference is junior Crystal Simmons did it her way. At the Cal-Nevada Championships this past weekend, she competed in the triple, long and high jumps, the 100 hurdles and was the leadoff runner in the 4x100 relay. She set a Fresno State record in the long jump after a personal-best 20-5 1/2 and took second. In addition, she was the triple jump champion with a mark of 42-2 3/4. Also, she was seventh in the 100 hurdles (14.33) and ninth in the high jump (5-5) and helped the relay team to a third place finish. Simmons was named Outstanding Female Field Athlete of the Cal-Nevada Championships.
Seven Days a Wiech(man)
It could have felt like a week for senior April Wiechmann this past weekend when she competed in five events. Over the course of two days she competed in the shot put, hammer, discus, high jump and javelin. She recorded personal-bests in the discus, javelin and hammer. Her hammer throw of 186-8 is a NCAA provisional mark. She finished fourth in both the discus (162-5) and hammer. Wiechmann also was sixth in the high jump (5-5).
It's Crystal Clear
There are two student-athletes on the squad this season with a first name of Crystal. The first is a junior named Crystal Simmons, a woman who owns the Fresno State outdoor record in the triple jump with a leap of 42-10 1/4 and the long jump record of 20-5 1/.2. She leads the team in all three jumps. The second Crystal is freshman Crystal Phillips. Recently Phillips anchored the 4x100-relay team at the Cal-Nevada Championships to a third place finish. She finished well below her best of 12.00 in the 100 with a time of 12.18 at Cal-Nevada due to an injury.
It's Not June Yet, Or is it?
She returned on Friday, March 29, to continue her reign in the steeplechase. Sophomore Kara June added another record to her collection as she became the first Cal-Nevada Champion in the event. She easily won with her time of 11:05.27 and in fact could have crossed sooner. Her personal-best is 10:53.83.
WAC Athletes of the Week
Fresno State's most recent Western Athletic Conference Athltete of the Week is junior Crystal Simmons. Simmons earned the honor after she was named Outstanding Female Performer of the 2002 Cal-Nevada Championships. Earlier, freshman Crystal Phillips took the honor for the week of March 18.
A Look Back at Indoors

FS collected 142 points, significantly fewer than host Nevada, which earned 201.45. However the count for the Bulldogs was more than double that of any other team, including California's score of 67.50. Earlier in the month, the 'Dogs defeated both Northern Arizona and UC Irvine at NAU, Feb. 2. Finally, the team captured first at the Air Force Elite Invitational, Jan. 26, with 126 points.
