FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State head coach Pat Hill opened his sixth session of spring football last night and he has high aspirations for the 2002 season. Over 80 players took place in last night's first practice session. The Bulldogs will have two more practices this week before holding their first scrimmage of the year at Bakersfield High School on Saturday, April 6, at noon.
"We need our young players to step up and take on challenges," said Hill. "We need our veteran players to be leaders and help teach the young guys the way we do things. We had a good practice with good enthusiasm and I liked that. Spring ball is always important to help determine the team's chemistry and identify areas that need to be addressed. Overall, we are much more advanced at this point than we were last year at this time."
Fresno State will hold three scrimmages before the annual Spring Game, which is scheduled for April 26. The Bulldogs will hold its second scrimmage in Merced on April 13.
"We love taking the team on the road for our spring scrimmages," Hill said. 'The guys like getting out into the different communities and we will like the fact that we are the Valley's team. We invite all Bulldog fans to come to our scrimmage and get a sneak peak of the 2002 Bulldogs. "
The Bulldogs are coming off an 11-3 record and third consecutive bowl appearance. Fresno State reached the top 10 in the national rankings for the first time in school history. For season ticket information, contact the Bulldog Ticket Office at (559) 278-DOGS.
