HONOLULU - No. 13 Fresno State softball notched a 4-1 victory over Hawai'i in Western Athletic Conference play at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Scoring four runs on 11 hits, the Bulldogs had four players collect multiple-hit games, including sophomore second baseman Pam Perez who went 3-4 with a run and a RBI.
Freshman right-hander Jamie Southern recorded her 28th victory and now owns the second-most wins by a rookie pitcher in school history. Allowing one run, Southern walked two and struck out one as she improved to 7-1 in WAC play. Tossing a four-hitter, Southern's only blemish was a one-out solo home run by shortstop Kate Judd in the bottom of the seventh.
With three double plays turned in the game, two by Fresno State, the Bulldogs' offense was ignited by Perez, Southern (2-3, run), freshman left fielder Julie Selbicky (2-4, RBI) and junior catcher Pam West (2-4, run).
Fresno State scored first with a run in the first before adding another in the second, fifth and seventh inning.
In the first with one out, Perez singled to left field before senior third baseman Lindsay Fossatti singled to the Rainbow Wahine shortstop deep in the hole and Southern singled to center field. With the bases loaded, Selbicky reached on a fielder's choice and knocked in the first run as Perez beat the tag at home.
In the second, West led off with a single up the middle. Senior first baseman Vanessa Czarnecki moved West to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior center fielder Tiffany Whipple then singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Perez then followed with a single to right field to score West.
In the fifth, Perez led off with a single to left field. Fossatti reached on a fielder's choice but Perez was forced out at second. Southern then doubled to left field as Fossatti advanced to third. Selbicky then followed with an infield single to load the bases. Sophomore designated player Lori Hoffman reached on a fielder's choice as Fossatti touched home plate successfully on a dropped ball by the Rainbow Wahine catcher.
In the seventh with one out, Southern walked before Selbicky singled to left field. After Wahine pitcher Melissa Coogan induced Hoffman into a ground out to put runners on second and third, freshman shortstop Leticia Pacheco reached safely on an error by the Rainbow Wahine third baseman, which allowed Southern to score.
The night cap was halted in the top of the third inning due to heavy rains. The Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium, which does not have a tarp, was nearly covered with standing water before the game was halted.
With the bases loaded, two outs and Southern at the plate with a 1-0 count, the scoreless game will resume where it left off tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 p.m. (HST).
