FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's David Carr, who in 2001 had one of the most outstanding seasons for a college quarterback ever, officially became a Houston Texan on Saturday when the organization chose him with the No. 1 overall pick in the National Football League Draft.
The pick was merely a formality, as the Texans announced three weeks ago their intention of drafting the former Bulldog No. 1. In becoming the top draft choice, Carr is the first player from a non-BCS Conference school to be drafted No. 1 since Tennessee State's Ed "Too Tall" Jones in the 1974 draft. The six BCS Conference schools are Big East, SEC, ACC, Big Ten, Big 12 and Pac-10.
Carr's 2001 season went down in the annals as one of the very best in college football history. He threw for 4,839 yards and 46 touchdowns, both tops in the nation. The Bakersfield, Calif., native became just the sixth quarterback in NCAA history to eclipse 4,000 yards and 40 touchdowns.
In recognition of his efforts, Carr was named All-American and won the Johnny Unitas Award as the nation's top senior quarterback. He finished fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting, highest ever for a Bulldog. Carr also led Fresno State to an 11-3 record, a third consecutive bowl appearance and to a program-high ranking of No. 8 at one point during the season.
