Fritz Leads Baseball Past Nevada 5-1 in Game One

RENO, Nev. - Junior RHP Ben Fritz (San Jose, Calif.) worked double duty once again for Fresno State (27-24, 13-8 WAC) in the 5-1 victory against Nevada (21-27, 7-15 WAC). Fritz, who struck out 15 the first time against Nevada in a three-hit shutout win, went 7.2 innings Saturday afternoon with five strikeouts and one run.
It marks the fourth straight time the Bulldogs defeat Nevada this season after sweeping the first series at Beiden Field.
Fritz led the Bulldogs at the plate as well, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored including two doubles, which gives him 15 on the year to lead the ballclub.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the second inning scoring on an error that allowed Fritz to come in from second and an RBI ground out by senior catcher Brad Harper (Madera, Calif.) that scored junior first baseman Brian Pierce (Fresno, Calif.).
Pierce, who went 1-for-1 on the day, left the game after the fourth inning due to a torn contact lens.
In the third inning, FS tacked on two more to up the lead to 4-0. Sophomore shortstop Chris Patrick (Fresno, Calif.) singled up the middle to drive in freshman outfielder Carl Lipsey (Fresno, Calif.). Sophomore third baseman Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.) added the second run on an RBI ground out that brought in junior second baseman Scott Beshears (Fresno, Calif.).
McGehee singled in the eighth inning to extend his hitting streak to 27 games this season. He finished going 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
Nevada managed to break Fritz' 12-inning scoreless streak against them in the fourth inning on an error by the Bulldogs that allowed shortstop Taylor Pullins to score after he led of the inning with a double.
Freshman RHP Chad Edwards (Gosford, Australia) finished the game, going 1.1 innings striking out one while allowing a hit. Edwards has yet to allow an earned run this season on 6.2 innings of work.
The game was the first of a doubleheader after being rained out yesterday.
