FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (29-24, 16-8 WAC) is looking for a repeat performance of last year's series played at Beiden Field against No. 2 Rice (41-11, 22-2 WAC). Last year the Bulldogs took two of three games from the then ranked No. 13 team in the country.
Earlier this season FS was swept at Reckling Park in the first meeting between the teams. Sophomore Casey McGehee (Santa Cruz, Calif.), who will bring a 29-game hit streak into the series, was the lone Bulldog with any success against the Owls, collecting six hits and two RBI earlier this season.
Rice has dominated WAC play this season losing just two games, both to San Jose State, which guarantees them its fifth straight conference title.
Along with great baseball this weekend fans can come and enjoy various activities taking place at the ballpark. Friday night's Blackbeards Family Fun Center Bulldog 500...Feet Race pits two of Fresno State's top administrators against each other. Athletics Director Scott Johnson will test his go-cart driving skills versus University President Dr. John D. Welty.
Both men are looking forward to the race after a spirited practice session Thursday morning. After viewing the pairs practice session, race promoter and Marketing Assistant Robert Sherman says "Neither wants to lose...it should be a real dog fight to the finish."
The fun is scheduled to continue on Saturday night. Fans are urged to come out early to Beiden Field to meet new Fresno State men's head basketball coach Ray Lopes. He'll be signing autographs and meeting fans on the concourse behind home plate from 6:30 to 6:50 before the start of the game.
After throwing out a first pitch Coach Lopes will don his racing gear and take to the track in the Blackbeards Family Fun Center Bulldog 500...Feet Race. Lopes is scheduled to take on Fresno State Bulldogs mascot Timeout.
