Fresno State Qualifies for NCAA Championships
After placing ninth at the West Regional, the Bulldogs will compete in the 2002 NCAA Championships on May 29-June . The tournamnet will be at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course in Columbus, Ohio. Ohio State University will host this year's championships. New Mexico, Washington, UNLV, Minnesota, Arizona, Texas, Pacific and Texas Tech also qualified in the western region.
Bulldogs Finish Ninth at West Regional
The fouth seeded Bulldogs took ninth place with a score of 879 at the at the UNM Championships GC in Albuquerque, N.M. on May 16-18. The team faced 27 teams and six individuals.
Three Bulldogs Finish in Top-29 at West Regional
Junior Nick Watney (Dixon, Calif.) finished third. His score is 74-69-71-214(-2). Senior Jonathan Echols (Hanford, Calif.) tied for 14th with 70-72-75-217(+1). Senior Dustin Smith (Crescent City, Calif.) tied for 29th and has a score of 70-75-75-220(+4).

Nick Watney was named Most Valuable Player Award
Jonathan Echols was named Most Outstanding Bulldog
Dustin Smith received the Bulldog Award
Ian Nelson and Ryan Carter were named Outstanding Freshmen
Chad Spencer was named Most Improved
Nick Watney and Ryan Carter were named WAC Low Scorer
Bulldog Rankings
GCAA list the team tied for eighth with TCU. Golfweek lists the team 15 and Nick Watney eighth. GolfStat lists the team 17th. Nick Watney is fouth and Jonathan Echols is 55th in the Golfstat Cup.
Watney Named WAC Player of the Year
Nick Watney was named Player of the Year at the WAC tournament in Hawaii. The junior is a Palmer Cup team member. He has 12 top 10 finishes including three wins and four seconds. The WAC Coach of the Year was Tom Duncan (Nevada) and WAC Freshman of the Year was Graham DeLeat (Boise State).
Watney and Echols Named All-WAC
Watney and Echols were named to the All-WAC team along with Franklin Hatchett (SMU), Chris Baryla (UTEP) and David Inglis (Tulsa).
