FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State (26-23) reverted to a formula that produced bad results in Hawaii last weekend by stranding 12 runners and hitting into a double play Staurday night at Pete Beiden Field. The Bulldogs snapped their 15-game home winning streak with an 8-3 loss against Sacramento State (17-28).
It was the Bulldogs' longest home winning streak since 1988 when they won 27 in a row.
Hornet starter Jeff Groeger pitched in and out of jams through the game allowing nine hits and four walks, including two hit batters. FS could never seem to cash in, however.
FS got a 3-2 lead in the second inning and seem to be on to a comfortable win, but the rally would go no further along with the home game win streak.
"We hit balls hard, but they were right at people. They got clutch hits when they needed to and we didn't. That's all there is to it," said sophomore Casey McGehee.
The Bulldogs' rally in the third started on a solo home run by sophomore outfielder Christian Hallaian (Fresno, Calif.). Junior outfielder Joey Myers scored the second run on a throwing error by the pitcher. The final run came on an RBI single by McGehee that brought home sophomore second baseman Scott Beshears (Fresno, Calif.).
Senior RHP Zach Minor (Walnut Creek, Calif.) wasn't as fortunate as Groeger, however, allowing five runs with three of them being earned on eight hits.
Sacramento State got two in the first and third and one in the fourth to build a 5-3 lead.
The Bulldogs would keep it close through eight innings, but the Hornets sealed the deal in the ninth, getting three more.
Chris Kinsey and Mario Celillo each went 2-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored, including a home run to lead Sacramento State.
Minor suffered his fourth loss of the season, dropping to 5-4 on the year. Groeger improved to 5-7 this season with the win.
McGehee extended his hitting streak to 25 games, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Fresno State and Sacramento State will play the rubber match tomorrow at 1:05 p.m.
