FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State's Bulldog Diamond will serve as a host site for the "teamsmith Nationals" Softball Tour on Monday, June 24, 6:00 p.m.
The exhibition will feature the Nationals against the Fresno All-Stars and the doubleheader will showcase some of the best fastpitch softball players in the world, including USA Olympians, WPSL All-Stars and NCAA All-Americans.
The cost is just $5.00 for the twinbill and seating is first come, first serve at Bulldog Diamond. There will be night-of-game walk-up ticket sales only.
This event is being conducted in full support by the Women's Pro Softball League (WPSL), which is taking the summer of 2002 off in order to rally communities in support of the WPSL as it looks to re-launch with six to ten markets in 2003.
In addition, teamsmith Nationals will conduct a clinic the morning of June 24 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Bulldog Diamond. Eight members of the teamsmith Nationals team, including Fresno State alumni Julie Smith and Kim Maher, will offer an all-skill level youth clinic for children ages 7-18. Instruction will include hitting, fielding, throwing, pitching, speed, agility and baserunning. The clinic cost is $45.00 and includes photos and autograph sessions and a ticket to that evening's doubleheader. Clinic spaces are limited. To register for the clinic, call (559) 278-6833.
The 30 citywide tour began June 4 in Chicago and wraps up August 21 in Dayton, Ohio. These tour stops include exhibition games, youth clinics, international competition, tournaments and special life-skills educational clinics with under-served kids on the fields of several Major League Baseball ballparks (Yankee Stadium, Dodger Stadium, Jacobs Field).
In 1997, Olympic Gold Medalist and WPSL All-Star Julie Smith founded teamsmith, inc., a nonprofit organization that is devoted to promoting life-skills, health and fitness, confidence, character and self esteem -- all through sports related events and activities. While generally working with kids in an effort to teach the benefits of good decision-making and the importance of education, teamsmith travels the country hosting sporting events and outings to provide opportunities, foster intellectual and athletic growth, support charitable endeavors, establish academic scholarships, development and mentoring programs.
