FRESNO, Calif. - New baseball head coach Mike Batesole has added to the 2002 roster with the acquisition of five players for the upcoming season. Fresno State signed two outfielders to national letters of intent and picked up three pitchers as transfers. Outfielders Torey Davis and Devon Wingo became the third and fourth players to commit to Fresno State under the first-year head coach. Right-handers Chad Clark, Josh Glynn and Donny Bair are each senior transfer from USC, Arkansas and Louisiana-Lafayette, respectively.
Devon Wingo (6'3, 200, R/R) will be an incoming freshman from Riverside, Calif. Wingo played center field at Martin Luther King, Jr. High School last season. "Wingo is a power-hitting outfielder with excellent speed," said Montez. "He has a strong arm and has a chance of being an immediate contributor as a freshman."
Torey Davis (6'2, 220, R/R) is an incoming junior from Yuba (Marysville, Calif.) Junior College where he played left field. "Davis is a strong player who had a reputation of hitting home runs at Yuba JC," said Montez.
Donny Bair (6'3, 220, L/L), who played his first two seasons at Merced (Calif.) College, is transferring from the University of Louisiana-Lafayette. Bair played his first two seasons at Merced College. At Louisiana-Lafayette, Bair went 1-1 with a 6.65 ERA in 11 appearances, three of them being starts. He struck out 20 batters in 21.2 innings of work. His twin brother, David, played for Fresno State last season as a junior. "Donny Bair is a crafty lefty with good velocity on his pitches," said Montez. "He has three pitches he can throw for strikes."
Chad Clark (6'6, 230, R/R) is transferring from USC as a senior. Last season, Clark was 0-2 in 10 appearances with four starts. He struck out 15 batters in 16 innings. In his sophomore year he was 4-2 with a 6.39 ERA in 20 appearances. "We think Clark will be a great asset to the team this season," said Montez. "He consistently throws between 90-94 miles per hour."
Josh Glynn (6'2, 190, R/R) is a senior transfer from the University of Arkansas. Last season Glynn was 2-0 with a 5.19 ERA in 18 appearances. He pitched 43.1 innings and struck out 30 batters while walking just 14. "He has a chance to be a weekend starter," said Montez. "Glynn throws his fastball up to 90 miles per hour with an exceptional change-up and an improved slider."
