This Week
Fresno State will face a pair of Big West schools in Pacific and Cal Poly. The Bulldogs will be at home Friday against the Tigers, then travel on Sunday to meet the Mustangs at San Luis Obispo, Calif.
What Just Happened
Fresno State dropped its first two home matches against No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 California. The Bulldogs were outscored 7-1 over the weekend. Freshman Katri Nokso-Koivisto scored her fourth goal of the season in the 4-1 loss against Cal. Nokso-Koivisto is now tied with freshman Kortney Lewis for the team-lead in goals (four) and points (nine). The third-ranked Bruins was the highest ranked team ever faced by a Bulldog team. UCLA and Cal were the highest pair of ranked teams Fresno State has ever faced consecutively. It was the third straight ranked opponent for the Bulldogs, that started with No. 17 Pepperdine, which is the first time that has ever happened also.
All-time Against Pacific
Fresno State is 2-5-1 all-time against the Tigers. The Bulldogs will be trying to snap a two-game skid against UOP, both of those losses coming in overtime. Last year the two were caught in a 0-0 duel, but the Tigers prevailed, scoring the golden goal minutes into the first overtime period. The Tigers, which started the season with seven straight wins, are coming of a loss to Oregon State.
All-Time Against Cal Poly
The Bulldogs are 3-4 all-time against the Mustangs. The teams had met every season since FS's inaugural in 1995, but the string was snapped last season. Fresno State's only NCAA championship match ever came against Cal Poly in 1999, with the Mustangs being the victor. Cal Poly is coming off a 1-0 win against Loyola Marymount.
All-Time Against the Big West
FS is 16-18-1 all-time against current Big West schools. It's the conference Fresno State has faced the most outside of WAC play. The Bulldogs have had success against UCSB, holding a 5-0 record against them. Fresno State, however, holds a winning record against only two Big West teams, UCSB and Utah State (1-0). The Bulldogs have tied the all-time series against Cal State Fullerton (2-2), Long Beach State (1-1) and Cal State Northridge (2-2). They have losing records all-time against Pacific (2-5-1), Cal Poly (3-4) and UC Irvine (0-4).
At Bulldog Stadium
The Bulldogs started their home schedule with two losses, against No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 Cal. In those two matches, FS was outscored 7-1. The third-ranked Bruins and fourth-ranked Cal were the highest ranked foes ever faced at home by a Bulldog squad. Fresno State closed out its home schedule on a positive note last year with a 3-2 victory against Nevada, Oct. 21. The Bulldogs finished the season 4-2 mark at home with a 2-2 record against WAC opponents. The Bulldog defense was especially tough at home allowing only 1.2 goals per match. Junior goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl posted a 1.11 GAA at home with 24 saves including a shutout against Rice.
Bulldogs Against Ranked Opponents
Fresno State is 0-3 against ranked teams this season. FS faced three straight ranked opponents from Sept. 15-22 in No. 17 Pepperdine, No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 Cal. They were outscored 14-2 in those matches. The seven goals allowed against Pepperdine were the most ever surrendered by a Bulldog squad. Fresno State is 3-12 all-time against top-25 nationally ranked teams. Last season the Bulldogs faced an all-time high three top-10 opponents, No. 4 Stanford, No. 6 Cal and No. 4 Santa Clara. The highest ranked team FS has ever beaten was in 1999 when the Bulldogs downed No. 7 USC 2-1. The highest ranked opponent FS has defeated on the road also came in 1999 when the Bulldogs beat No. 13 James Madison.
