FRESNO, Calif. - For Fresno State football coach Pat Hill academic and athletics go hand in hand. For the third consecutive year, the Fresno State football team has led the Western Athletic Conference in Academic All-WAC selections.
The Academic All-WAC team was announced today by the league. Since 1997, Hill's first season, Fresno State has produced 49 Academic All-WAC players, the most in the league during that span. The 10 selections are the most-ever in school history. Fresno State has averaged eight Academic All-WAC players since Hill became head coach.
"It's a great tribute to our players and coaching staff," said Hill. "Even though we got a black eye during the bowl game about perceived ineligible players, this proves that we are doing the right thing when it comes to academic success. We have 37 players achieve a 3.0 GPA or higher last semester. That's a great accomplishment."
To be eligible for the Academic All-WAC team, student-athletes must maintain a 3.2 cumulative grade point average and be a significant contributor on the team. Fresno State edged Rice, which had nine Academic All-WAC selections, followed by Tulsa (eight), Louisiana Tech and Nevada (six), SMU, UTEP, Boise State and Hawai'i (three) and San Jose State (two).
