FRESNO, Calif. - Greg Shearer and Andy Sinn won both of their matches and are still alive in their respective flights in the 11th annual Bulldog Classic, taking place this weekend at the Wathen Tennis Center.
Several West Coast schools are competing in the event, which this year is divided into flights for the first time in tournament history. Participating teams include USC, California, Washington, UCLA, Oregon and Fresno State.
In Flight A singles, Shearer, a junior, opened play by defeating Elad Stern of UC Santa Barbara 6-4, 6-0. He followed that up with a second round victory over California's Wayne Wong 6-2, 6-2.
Also competing in Flight A singles for the Bulldogs were Stefan Suta and Alex Krohn. Suta, who was the Bulldog Classic champion in 2001 and won the tournament last year when Hector Almada defaulted in the finals, was upset by Drew Hoskins of USC 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 in the first round.
Krohn opened with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 victory over Pete Scharler of Washington before falling to Krzystof Kwinta of UCLA 6-3, 6-0.
In Flight B singles, Sinn won twice to advance to the quarterfinals. His first victory came over Matt Ozurovich of San Diego by a score of 6-0, 6-3. He rolled again in the second round, taking out Michael Ricks of Washington 6-3, 6-1.
Doubles also began on Friday, with the tandem of Suta and Shearer posting a first round win over Nevada's Adam Jooste and Daniel Ericsson 8-6. Unfortunately, Fresno State's other doubles team of Sinn and Krohn, lost to Adam Fauvre and J.J. Whitlinger 8-6.
Play continues Saturday at the Wathen Tennis Center.
