FRESNO, Calif.- Just five days after equaling its highest single-game shot total in school history, Fresno State got it right the second time around.
The Bulldogs rattled off a single-game program record 34 shots in a 7-1 rout of San Jose State on Friday night at Bulldog Stadium. Fresno State limited San Jose State to just five shots on the night and held a 24-3 advantage after halftime in that department.
Three different Bulldog players scored twice and sophomore Koleen Anderson (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) netted her first goal of the year in the victory, which was Fresno State's third in a row.
Fresno State (6-6-2, 3-2-0 WAC) led just 2-0 at intermission but controlled the pace of the contest. Scores by sophomore Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) and senior Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) highlighted a first period that saw the 'Dogs outshoot the Spartans 10-2.
Less than two minutes into the second half, sophomore Kortney Lewis (Visalia, Calif.) fired a shot past SJSU goalkeeper Erin Lavey for her first score of the match to make it 3-0. Lewis and Anderson led the Bulldogs with six shots in the game, with five on goal for Lewis. San Jose State (2-11-0, 1-4-0 WAC) was led by Andrea Hartz with two shots.
Fresno State then extended their lead by scoring three times within the next 10 minutes. Sayegusa notched her second goal of the game off a nice assist from freshman Erika Sugano (Yokohama, Japan) at the 52:42 mark, making it 4-0. One minute later, Nokso-Koivisto struck again following an assist from Lewis to put the 'Dogs up 5-0.
Lewis then found herself on the receiving end just moments later, scoring her second goal and team-leading eighth of the season off a corner kick with an assist from Nokso-Koivisto.
Leading 6-0, the Bulldogs would convert one other opportunity in the second half. Freshman Antonea Lugo (Clovis, Calif.) fed Anderson, who battled the SJSU keeper one-on-one and fired a shot into the net for her first score of the season.
San Jose State's Heather Dickinson scored on a penalty kick late in the match to round out the scoring.
All eligible players saw playing time for Fresno State, including sophomore goalie Chelsea Mays (Littleton, Colo.), who played the final 19:18 between the posts with one save. Lugo, who also checked in off the bench, registered four shots and was one of three reserves to record an assist.
Fresno State fell just shy of matching its highest single-game scoring output of eight goals, achieved Sept. 17, 2000 against Weber State.
The Bulldogs now turn their attention to the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine (9-4-1, 4-1-0 WAC). The two teams will square off in Honolulu next Friday at 9 p.m. PST in a key conference match.
