FRESNO, Calif. - The doubles team of Alex Krohn and Stefan Suta lost a 9-8 (2) heartbreaker in the semifinals of the ITA West Regional Championship, being played this weekend at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
The unseeded Krohn and Suta lost to another unseeded duo, Jorgen Arnesen and Pablo Pires de Almeida of San Francisco. Arnesen and Pires de Almeida went on to lose in the doubles championship 8-6 to top-seeded Jon Endrikat and Brian Morton of UC Irvine.
Krohn and Suta were in control of the match early, leading by two breaks at 4-1 and 5-2. But Arnesen and Pires de Almeida fought back to eventually take an 8-7 lead. Krohn then held serve but the USF duo was too much in the tiebreaker, winning 7-2.
Coincidentally, Arnesen and Pires de Almeida were in the same two-break deficit in their round of 16 against Fresno State's Greg Shearer and Sergiu Modoc. But the Dons tandem rebounded to win that match 9-7.
"Overall, I thought it was a very good weekend for the team," head coach Brad Dancer said. "Alex and Stefan played well, but I have to hand it to the team they lost to. They played very well and made the shots when they needed to. But our guys really competed hard and made it a successful tournament."
Next up for Fresno State is the Southern California Intercollegiates, which take place Nov. 6-9 in Los Angeles.
