Golf Prepares for 41st Fresno State-Lexus Classic

BULLDOGS PREPARE FOR FRESNO STATE-LEXUS CLASSIC
The Bulldogs are preparing to host the 41st Fresno State-Lexus Classic, Fri.-Sat., Oct 10-11. The tournament will be played at the par-72, 6,503 yard Belmont Country Club. The 15-team field will include a six-man format. The schools competing are BYU, Cal State Northridge, Colorado State, Denver, Fresno State, Long Beach State, Louisiana-Monroe, Nevada, Pacific, San Diego State, San Jose State, Texas Tech, UTEP, Utah and Wyoming. Fresno State will also hold a College Amateur on Thursday, Oct. 9. Fresno State has captured the championship three straight years, along with former Bulldog Nick Watney garnering the individual title three years in a row.
BULLDOGS FINISHED EIGHTH AT WASHINGTON
Fresno State traveled to Seattle, Wash., to compete in the Opus Northwest Husky Invitational Sept. 29-30 at Gold Mountain Complex in Bremerton. The 54-hole tournament took place on the par-72, 7,035-yard Olympic Course. Fresno State finished eighth out of the 10-team field with a 1124 (383-375-366). Washington captured first with a 1087 (365-366-356), while San Diego State State garnered second place honors with 1108 (372-373-363). Individually, playing with a six-man squad, senior Chad Spencer with a 221 (73-76-72) and junior Ryan Carter with a 221 (76-73-72), tied for 13th. Sophomore Mark Modglin tied for 29th with 226 (79-75-72), senior Jeremy Moreno tied for 38th with a 228 (76-77-75), sophomore Dusty Diedrich tied for 47th with a 232 (83-74-75) and freshman Daniel Buell tied for 59th with 238 (79-81-78).
'DOGS TIED FOR SEVENTH AT UOP
The Bulldogs traveled to Stockton,Calif., to compete in their first tournament of the season last week. The 12-team UOP Invitational was played at The Reserve at Spanos Park. Fresno State tied for seventh out of the 12-teamfield finishing with a final round of 879 (292-294-293). Georgia Southern captured the championship with 854 (286-279-289). The Bulldogs that competed were senior Chad Spencer, who tied for eighth with a 213 (71-69-73). Playing as an individual, sophomore Mark Modglin tied for 11th with a 216 (69-70-77). Junior Ryan Carter, 220 (74-72-74), and freshman Daniel Buell, 220 (72-78-70), tied for 28th. Also playing as an individual, senior Jeremy Moreno tied for 40th with a 223 (75-74-74). Junior George McKean tied for 57th with a 228 (77-75-76) and sophomore Ryan McDonald finished 66th with a 232 (75-79-78).
GOLF CAPTURES WAC TITLE
Fresno State finished first out of the 10-team tournament field at the WAC Championship last May in Houston with a final score of 862. The Bulldogs were three strokes better than second place Tulsa (865) and six better than UTEP (868). Individually, senior Nick Watney came in second with a 208 (73-66-69) after a sudden death match with Tulsa's David Inglis (68-69-71=208)(4-4-4). Watney also earned First Team All-WAC honors and his third straight WAC Player of the Year award. Junior Chad Spencer came in third with 211 (72-70-69). Spencer garnered Second Team All-WAC honors. Freshman Ryan McDonald tied for 22nd with a 223 (73-71-79), sophomore Ryan Carter tied for 32nd with 225 (74-72-79) and Jeremy Moreno finished 43rd with 234 (81-79-74).
