FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State heads to the island this week to take on Hawaii in a key conference showdown. The Bulldogs and Warriors meet at Aloha Stadium on Saturday at 9 p.m. PT in a game that will be televised locally by KFRE WB 59 (cable 5). Ralph Wood and Randy Rosenbloom will serve as broadcasters.
Last week, the Bulldogs were defeated at Colorado State 34-10 in their final non-conference game of the year. The Rams' Bradlee Van Pelt led the charge by throwing for 197 yards and two touchdowns and running for 154 more. CSU ended up totaling 497 yards of total offense and scored 24 of its points in the second half. A positive for Fresno State was the return of quarterback Paul Pinegar, who saw his first game action of 2003. He threw for 111 yards.
Fresno State leads the all-time series with Hawaii 18-16-1. However, many of the Bulldogs' losses in the series have come in Honolulu, where Aloha Stadium has been Fresno State's personal house of horrors. The Bulldogs are 6-12 all-time on the island, including just 1-10 since 1967. The only Fresno State win during that time period came in 1994, when the Bulldogs defeated UH 31-16. The last two games at Aloha Stadium have resulted in dramatic Hawaii victories. In 1999, the Warriors won in double overtime, and in 2001, Ashley Lelie's acrobatic TD catch with 13 seconds left gave UH a win.
