FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State baseball coach Mike Batesole has announced the signing of infielder Brian Chavez and right-handed pitchers Tyler Fockler, Chuckie Fick, Michael Notaro and Adam Gillihan to national letters of intent to begin playing for the Bulldogs in the 2005 season.
A senior at Quartz Hill (Palmdale, Calif.) High School, Chavez is coming off a junior season in which he batted .491 to earn all-conference honors. Chavez was a teammate of Bulldog freshman Alex Massari.
"Brian is a sleek fielding infielder with an above average arm," Batesole said. "He handles the bat well, has good instincts and will only get stronger as he matures."
Fockler is a two-sport athlete at Scotts Valley (Santa Cruz, Calif.) High School where he is also the starting quarterback on the football team. In addition to his fastball that has been consistently clocked between 88-92 miles per hour, Fockler throws a slider and change-up.
"Tyler is very athletic with a plus upside," Batesole said. "He has a chance to contribute right away."
The nephew of All-Star outfielder/first baseman Robert Fick and the son of St. Louis Cardinals national cross-checker, Chuck Fick, Chuckie is a senior at Newbury Park (Calif.) High School.
"Chuckie is a tall, lanky right-hander with plus two-seam movement to compliment a curveball and change," Batesole said.
A two-way player at Westlake (Westlake Village, Calif.) High School, Notaro has split time between the mound and first base.
"Michael has excellent hands at first base and can also give you innings as a middle reliever," Batesole said. "He has a chance to hit for power."
Gillihan begins his sophomore season at Crowder (Bentonville, Ark.) Junior College where he pitches and plays in the outfield. As a freshman, he hit .353 with 11 homers while notching seven saves on the mound.
"Adam is a solid two-way player who can hit for power and throw between 88 and 93," Batesole said. "He has a chance to be an impact guy right away."
The five signees complete the 15-man recruiting class that includes eight pitchers, four infielders and three outfielders.
