FRESNO, Calif.- The Fresno State women's soccer program held its annual awards banquet on Sunday afternoon at the Smittcamp Alumni House.
The event honored current Bulldog student-athletes with team awards distributed by the coaching staff. Team members voted on the award winners.
Several team awards were presented, highlighted with senior defender Kristyn Kellogg (Atascadero, Calif.) being named the team MVP. Kellogg started all 18 matches for Fresno State last year and all 57 during her career with the Bulldogs. She scored her first goal in a Fresno State uniform during a 5-2 victory over Boise State back on Oct. 3. Regarded as one of the Bulldog's top defensive players and team leaders, Kellogg earned WAC All-Academic honors last year and is two-time Fresno State Scholar Athlete.
Most valuable players on both the offensive and defensive sides were also awarded. Sophomore Katri Nokso-Koivisto (Kokkola, Finland) was named offensive MVP after finishing with five goals and five assists for a total of 15 points. Sophomore Kelly Irwin (Vacaville, Calif.) was named defensive MVP as she started all 18 matches and helped anchor the Fresno State back line.
Three additional awards were presented as sophomore Chelsea Mays (Littleton, Colo.) was given the Coaches Award, sophomore Jackie Wax was named Most Inspirational and freshman Erika Sugano was tabbed Most Improved.
Also honored at the banquet was Fresno State's senior class of Kellogg, Erin Sayegusa (Honolulu, Hawaii) and Katy Klawitter (Clovis, Calif.).
Fresno State closed out the 2003 campaign with a 7-9-2 overall record and a 4-4-0 mark in WAC competition. Playing one of the toughest schedules in school history that featured five opponents ranked in the top-25, the Bulldogs also advanced to the WAC Tournament for the ninth consecutive season. Fresno State's 4-4-0 conference ledger signaled the third straight year with a record of .500 or better in league play.
