Track and Field Completes Sweep At Northern Arizona

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz.- Both the men's and women's track and field squads took first place honors on Saturday afternoon in a tri-meet at Northern Arizona.
Fresno State's men's team defeated host Northern Arizona 82-62 and routed UC Irvine 103-34. The women's team was just as impressive, defeating Northern Arizona by an 86-59 margin and topping UC Irvine 92.5-44.5.
For the men, senior Kyle Carano (Fresno, Calif.) placed first in two events- winning the long jump with a mark of 7.01m and the triple jump at 15.86m. Kevin Carano (Fresno, Calif.) took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.93.
Senior Roosevelt Cook (Ontario, Calif.) added to Fresno State's list of first place performers, clocking in with a time of 1.54.97 in the 800-meter run, just ahead of runner-up senior Alex Mason (Alameda, Calif.) at 1.56.23.
Senior Justin Schwartz (Herald, Calif.) captured first place honors in the pole vault, soaring to a season-best 5.0m. Junior Joe Vasquez (Selma, Calif.) won the weight throw with a toss of 18.85m in front of teammate Shlomi Ben-Shushan (Kfar.Saba, Israel) at 18.25m.
On the women's side, four Bulldog women took first place honors in their respective events. Leading the group was junior Katie Christianson (Indian Wells, Calif.) and sophomore Crystal Phillips (Long Beach, Calif.), who both won two events.
Christianson, who also earned runner-up finishes in the 60-meter hurdles and the 200-meter dash, won the 60-meter hurdles with a mark of 8.95 and the long jump with a leap of 18-4. Phillips continued her strong season by leading the field in the 60 and 200-meter runs, earning a mark of 7.55 in the 60m and 24.60 in the 200m.
Junior Kara June (Santa Maria, Calif.) claimed the victory in the mile run with a time of 5:12.90. Also in the mix was junior Jenny Moore (Upland, Calif.), who won the triple jump with a leap of 11.20m.
Fresno State also sent a contingent of athletes to the Road Runner Invitational in Bakersfield, Calif., on Saturday afternoon. Two Bulldog harriers stood out with impressive performances at the event, which did not use a team-scoring method. On the men's side, Jesse Smith checked in with a time of 6.3 in the 55-meter sprint to take first place honors. Sophomore Domonique Harper (Long Beach, Calif.) also placed first with a time of 8.0 in the 55-meter hurdles.
The Bulldogs compete in the Bill Cosby Invitational next Saturday, Feb. 8, in Reno, Nevada.
