POWAY, Calif. - It doesn't make sense that a single pitch drilled to right center by Kansas' shortstop Destin Frankenstein was all it took to outshine a 13-strikeout performance from sophomore All-America pitcher Jamie Southern.
But Southern, who went the distance and fell to 1-4 on the year, can only wonder how a one out full count pitch to the second batter in the top of the first got away as she fanned a season-high 13 while walking two.
With both teams only collecting a pair of hits a piece, Kansas posted a 1-0 victory and improved to 6-1 while the Bulldogs were left standing in bewilderment, feeling the sting of a 1-7 record.
Senior catcher Pam West and junior first baseman Monnaye Bernal each had a hit for the Bulldogs.
Kansas, which committed three errors, had hits from Frankenstein and center fielder Mel Wallach.
The Bulldogs looked to even the score in the bottom of the first. With one out, junior center fielder Mitzi Ing drew a walk before junior right fielder Lori Hoffman reached safely on an error by the Jayhaw third baseman. Southern then grounded out to the pitcher to move the runners to second and third. However, Kansas pitcher Kara Pierce (4-1) induced West into comebacker to end the inning.
The 'Dogs threatened in the fourth. Hoffman reached safely on an error by the Kansas' shortstop to start the inning off. With freshman Nicole Shan coming in to pinch run for Hoffman, Southern flew out to center field. With one out, West singled through the right side as runners were now on first and second. Pierce got a strikeout and another comebacker to stifle the offense.
In the seventh with one out, Bernal singled to left field. Freshman Angelina Diaz came in to pinch run for Bernal. Freshman third baseman Veronica Green then sacrificed Diaz to second but Pierce got senior left fielder Sha Oliver to pop up to the shortstop and end the game.
Fresno State must regroup in order to tally a win in its final day of action at the 13th Annual Campbell/Cartier Tournament tomorrow morning. The Bulldogs close out play against New Mexico at 11:30 a.m.
