BYE WEEK
The golf team has a bye week this week in order to prepare for their next action, Mon.-Tues., March 3-4, when it travels to the Cleveland Southwest Intercollegiate hosted by USC. The 'Dogs have four more tournaments until the WAC Championship, April 28-30, hosted by Rice.
WATNEY RANKED SECOND
In the third week of the spring season, Nick Watney is ranked No. 2 in the nation by the Golfstat poll, with an average of 69.33 in 21 rounds. Watney was recently ranked #1 in the fall season by Golfstat Cups Standings and GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index. Watney won four consecutive titles in the fall season which helped him leap to #1. "It is rare to win four tournaments, it is especially rare in college," head coach Mike Watney said. Watney entered his senior season with a scoring average of 70.53.
GOLF FINISHED IN 13th
The Bulldogs traveled to Hawaii Feb. 12-14 and competed in the Taylor Made Waikoloa Invitational in Hilo, Hawaii. The 'Dogs struggled as they captured 13th place with a final score of 866, 30 strokes under first place UCLA (836). The five-man squad included senior Nick Watney, who finished second with a score of 207, junior Jeremy Moreno, who finished 48th with a score of 217, junior Chad Spencer, who finished 75th with a score of 222, freshman Ryan McDonald, who finished 89th with a score of 224 and Mark Modglin, who finished 93rd with a score of 225. There were 26 teams competing on the 72 par course at the Waikoloa Resort. Last season the Bulldogs finished third out of 24 teams, while individually, Watney finished second with a score of 211 (72-68-71).
'DOGS FINISH 13th AT ARIZONA
The golf team traveled to Tucson, Ariz., Feb. 3-4, and competed in the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate hosted by Arizona. The team finished 13th out of 16 teams with a final third round score of 865, 36 strokes under first place Arizona. Individually, senior Nick Watney finished 26th with a score of 213, junior Jeremy Moreno tied for 38th with a score of 215, junior Chad Spencer tied for 52nd with a score of 218, sophomore Ian Nelson tied for 54th with a score of 219 and freshman Ryan McDonald tied for 79th with a score of 230.
FALL REVIEW
The fall season has proved to be a successful season. With six tournaments under their belt, the Bulldogs captured five Top 10 finishes with two championship titles, the Fresno State-Lexus Classic and the Alister MacKenzie tournament. There are six tournaments in the spring leading to the WAC championship in late April. The WAC championship will be hosted by Rice.
